CD10-02: Eumseong, Ritual Song for Good Fortune

(Eumseong, Chungbuk Province/ Noh, Hee-Tae(70yrs)/ 1992)

◆ Ritual song sung by Buddhist monks when going around houses to raise funds for building temples and so on. It is also called 'Gosaban-sori'. The singer became a monk when he was thirty years old and learnt this song. He is still the head monk of a small temple called Simgok-sa. When raising funds for building a temple, village folk music players would accompany the monk. Since this is a song by a professional singer, it is rich with narrative but only the beginning part has been included here. The lyrics deal with the designation of the capital of Chosun Dynasty and prevention of various ill luck.
