CD08-10: Yeongpung, Funeral Song for Carrying Bier
(Yeongpung(Yeongju), Gyeongbuk Province/ Woo, Sang-gi(52yrs)/ 1993)
◆ In Yeongpung-kun(now Yeongju City), there are many villages related to the belief of feng-shui(풍수지리) and songs for carrying bier(상여소리 & 달구소리) are well developed here. In the neighboring village Yuchon, a 300 hundred-year old bier has been preserved. According to the singer, this song for carrying bier has been handed down from the time of King Chongjo of Chosun Dynasty. The singer learnt the song from his grand-father and father.
(Content of Song)
“Leaving a good house, I am going
My parents and my relatives, I bid you farewell
This is the end of the riches I have frugally gathered
We are going up a rough mountain, so be careful
We are going up the mountain so push hard
We have arrived at the land of death
Put the bier down, carefully”
