CD08-07: Gokseong, Funeral Song for Carrying Bier
(Gokseong, Jeonnam Province/ Hwang, Su-seong(70yrs)/ 1990)
◆ Sung while carrying bier to the grave site. The beginning part called 'Ojang-sori' is sung standing and carrying the bier, just before starting out for the grave site. It is supposed to be repeated three times, however, due to time limit, it is recorded only once here. The 'Gwanambosal'(관암보살, Goddess of Mercy) and 'Namuami-tabul'(나무아미타불, May Buddha's Blessing be Upon Us!) are sung while walking slowly only flat ground. 'Eori-gari'(어리가리) and 'Eoha-neomcha'(어하넘차) are sung while walking normally and 'Neohwaneol'(너화널) is sung while crossing a narrow bridge. Finally, 'Gwanambosal' is sung once more while putting down the bier.
(Content of Song)
“There are many mountains at front and back and where has the soul of the dead gone?
If you were going to leave so early, why did you come to this world?
They say the land of death is far away, and you left so quickly
I am going to the land of death
Let us go to make the grave
Our bier carriers are working hard
Carry the bier carefully”
