CD07-04: Yangsan, Woodcutter's Lament - Eosanyeong

(Yangsan, Gyeongnam Province/ Kim, Mal-su(75yrs)/ 1992)

◆ This song which was usually sang by men to lament about their life while going up the mountain to cut wood, was sometimes sang by women while they went up the mountain to cut wood or pick some wild greens, or while weeding the dry field. The singer expresses the longing and resentment towards her mother who does not come and see in the song, and this kind of content can also be found at times in other songs of women. The singer called this song 'Saeyong'(새용).

(Content of Song)
“The mountain is high and the valley is deep
Where has my mother gone that she does not come back?
When the sun sets, even the crows and magpies return to their nest, and even top minnows return to their homes under the rock
But where has my mother gone that she knows not to look for me
The night is deep and the moon is bright
I call out Mother, Mother
My mother does not answer, but only the mountain answers, instead”
