CD06-19: Sinan, Song for Picking Fruit - Dolggaeggokji
(Sinan, Jeonnam Province/ Bak, Bang-mae(69yrs)/ 1989)
◆ This used to be the song sung by the women of Gageo-do island(가거도) while picking fruits from a tree. This tree bloomed in Autumn and bore edible fruit in Spring. The fruit is called 'Bolkae'(볼깨) in Gageo-do island, and several took turns singing a verse while picking the fruits. Same song is found in Bigeum-do island(비금도) of Sinan but it was not sung while picking fruit. The charm of this song lies in the following phrase that goes 'Huhuhukji' which seems to describe the sound of the flail top rotating. This song often starts with the phrase 'Rotate and rotate, Dolggaena ggo—-okji rotate' and it is believed the song obtained the title Dolggaegokji because of this.
(Content of Song)
“You, named Jin Sung-ro living in Gangjin, how can you spend your time so leisurely playing chess when your wife is being shipped away
Spring has come
Spring has come to our county
Pick all the fruits
I don't have the skill to pick them well
The green things are the leaves and the red things are the fruits”
