CD06-17: Goseong, Work Song/Play Song - Jajin-arari

(Goseong, Gangwon Province/ A:Nam, Gye-ja(79yrs), B:Choi, Dong-mae(81yrs)/ 1994)

◆ “It is also called 'Gangwon-do Arirang'. Frequently, on location, these songs have no title. However, around the eastern Gangwon regions, it seems appropriate to generally call them 'Jajin-arari'. This song is widely distributed around Gangwon, North Chungcheong, North Gyeongsang and North Jeolla Provinces, as a folk song with many uses. In eastern Gangwon districts, it was used as a song for planting rice sprouts, arranged with a certain refrain, and in North Gyeongsang and Chungcheong districts, it was sung while going up the mountain to cut wood. Women also sang the song while gathered in numbers to spin hemp. This singer used to sing this song while spinning hemp with others.

(Content of Song)
“Time flows like the water, and our lives pass like the wind
My married life is so harsh, I can't take it
In the Spring the frozen river melts, and with my dear love's words, my frozen heart melts
My older sister-in-law is so fierce. She beat me yesterday and she beats me again today
The heartless car brought me here and why doesn't it take me back to my hometown”
