CD05-14: Yeocheon, Boating Song of Geomundo - Rowing Song & 4 others
(Yeocheon, Jeonnam Province/ Jeong, Gyeong-yong(45yrs)/ 1990)
◆ Fishing songs that are found around Geomundo Island were collected and submitted to 'Namdo Cultural Festival' in 1976 under the title 'Boating Songs of Geomundo'. It was designated as the 1st Intangible Cultural Asset of South Jeolla Province. Besides the songs included here, the 'Sulbi-sori'(술비소리) which is sung while twisting ropes is included. 'Boating Songs of Geomundo' are songs that were mostly sung while catching anchovies. 'Olrae-sori'(올래소리) is sung while hauling up nets, but in other regions it is usually called 'Sulbi-sori'. 'Garae-sori' is sung while scooping up fish that are caught in the net onto the boat. 'Sseol-sori' is sung while rowing quietly back home after catching anchovies and 'eoyeongcha-sori' is the merry song that is sung when nearing the village with a ship full of fish.
(Content of Song)
“<Rowing Song>
Let's go. Let's go hurry to the fishing ground
The mountain in front is drawing near and the mountain at back is growing further away
Row the big row in the middle, with all your strength
The tide is going out so let us catch anchovies
<Song for Hauling Nets>
Haul the nets carefully that they don't become entangled. If they become entangled we can't catch fish
People at the back, keep the net in order. People at the bow, pull the net as hard as you can
The sea gods of north, south, east, west and the center, please fill our boat
When our boat is full, we will stick a flag of five colors and will look after our parents and wife and children
The bubbles are coming and I think our boat is going to be full
<Scooping up Fish>
Our fishermen are scooping up the anchovies very well
If we can't carry all of them in our boat, we can go with the net hanging on the side of the boat
Looking at the stars over there, the day will dawn soon. Let us scoop up the fish, before the day breaks
<Rowing Song>
The owner's wife is dancing and swinging her hips
I will buy rice with the anchovies I have caught then my house is filled with laughter
<Song for A Delightful Good Catch>
The ship is full. The ship is full
The owner's wife and the neighbor's wife come out to welcome us dancing and swinging their hips
When we reach shore we'll drink, sing and dance”
