CD05-12: Sinan, Rowing Song
(Sinan, Jeonnam Province/ Kim, Myeong-hu(64yrs), Choi, Wol-san(73yrs), Im, Dong-chae(68yrs)/ 1989)
◆ Of the 'Song for Catching Anchovies', this is the part sung while rowing the boat. Anchovies are caught from mid June to mid September of lunar calendar. Seven or eight fishermen row out to sea at early evening and catch anchovies during the night until before sunrise next day. This is because the anchovies are attracted by the light in the dark. The 'Songs for Catching Anchovies of Gageodo Island' has been designated as the 22nd Intangible Cultural Asset and includes series of songs that appear in the process of catching anchovies. Here, only this 'Rowing Song' and the 'Song for Scooping Up Fish' which follows next, are included.
(Content of Song)
“Let us go to the northern sea
Our boat will catch all the anchovies living in this boundless blue sea
Who will I feed with the anchovies I have caught?
After offering some to the country, I'll look after my aged parents and raise my young children”
