CD04-09: Namjeju, Song for Weeding Dry Field - A-wegi

(Namjeju, Jeju Island/ Kim, O-saeng(56yrs)/ 1989)

◆ This is a type of song that makes up a significant part of the songs for weeding dry field in Jeju Island. Since the refrain starts with 'A-hayang…', it is also called 'A-wegi'(wegi means shouting). It has the same tune as the 'Seouje-sori' that appears in the rituals of Jeju Island.

(Content of Song)
“In the field where weeds are thick and furrows wide, let us sing while we weed
The front end draws near and the back end grows distant
In the field where weeds are thick and furrow wide, let the weeding hands move quickly
In this so very hot a day, let us sing while we weed”
