CD01-11: Goheung, Song for Planting Rice Sprouts - Kin-sangsa-sori

(Goheung, Jeonnam Province/ Kim, Tae-myeong(65yrs)/ 1990)

◆ This is a the rice planting song of 'Kin(slow) Sangsa-sori' which has the same form as the famous “Farmer's Song” from 'The Story of Chunhyang', a traditional Korean solo opera drama 'Pansori'. Most of the 'Sangsa-sori' around Goheung along with Sinan, Jindo and Wando regions are different from the tunes of the 'Farmer's Song'. However the 'Sangsa-sori' of this village, uniquely, is similar to the famous theatrical tune.

(Content of Song)
“Hey there farmer, listen to what I have to say. Plant this rice paddy and that paddy and go over to the next one
By farming this land, we will make offerings to our ancestors and afterwards we will eat and spend, and sing as well
That moon is the one enjoyed by the merry makers of the past. Cut down the cinnamon tree on that moon and build a little cottage to look after my parents and farm the land well
The sun is setting upon the western mountain and the moon is rising. But the working hand of the farmers move ever so slowly.”
